New sims server installed
« on: October 24, 2007, 09:40:55 AM »
Has anyone else got there new Sims server and NAS installed yet, just wondering as it a bit of a hassle you have to find a secure space (not the server room in case of a fire) with access to a working data point, plus two power sockets for the Portable HDD's and who ever does the backing up of the Sims server has to have access to this area. All of the above is like hen's teeth in are school so we ended up having to take one of the phones out of reception, best of all they told me these requirements the day they turned up to install it, plus the NAS Storage is a full sized Dell Tower, which didn't go down well with the receptionist.

No but the requirements were e-mailed to us in a sheet which we had to fill the datapoints in on. No doubt someone over there got the sheet and never passed it on to you.

We are going to stick the backup server in the main reception as well. I dont think the secretaries are happy about this but the head said to do it. I would have prefered the wee store we had the old simms server in (but there was only the bnc connectors).

its a noisy bugger too!
The new SIMS server is in the coms room in the same cabinet as the rest of the C2K servers.

C2k are keeping the old Sims server for about a month i was told just to make sure all data has been copied successfully,Then we can have it.
To reply to stephens post, no one in the school received any email, i was told by our office staff that c2k phoned about 2 hours before these boy's arrived and told them to have an access point chosen (that 21st century communication for you).

Casper the install took a full day, but i have to say so far we have had no problems with Sims so i hope it stays that way.

We received an email asking what data points would be used but no sign of the install yet.

I also have the comms and server cabinets behind me, I bet the NAS box isn't that loud!! (or warm :( )

we filled in a form and emailed it off, and the NAS is going to be right beside me :O

I don't know where they are going to put our server though - we have no room in our current cabinet.  Do they supply a new cabinet if you need one?

Can it not replace the old simms server in your cabinet? Thats what we're doing.

It's been mentioned in this thread and I think I read on the Exchange site that the two would run in parallel for a short while to make sure there are no problems. So I would say that it won't be a straight swap.

This is nuts! Suely the whole point of a removable drive is that you store the drive somewhere safe and secure.

Got an e-mail regrding the change over in the servers.  Had to complete a survrey in teh shape of a form.  We had to provide a life point NAS and two spare ports on a switch.  Luckily we had both otherwise we would have had to free up ports and a point.  Think the e-mail went to teh authorised users and principal.

Si I thought you worked in the corner of a classroom - not exactly a secure spot!

I am glad I managed to push for air con - it only took me a couple of years, I think what finally won it was when I managed to get it across that it was more detremental to the servers than me and if they wanted to buy new servers after they burnt themselves out it was only about 6 grand each. I liked the heat.

Beats the NAS drive is a full Dell tower PC similar to the optiplex series and there is very little noise out of it, our Onelan signage PC is noisier and its a quarter of the size.

Also the new Sims server is like the Hp blade center (Wee tiny thin thing) so it should fit in most cabinets
