Old computers - reuse?
« on: January 24, 2023, 02:17:40 PM »
I have now got 70 3010 desktops sitting in my office. I started to rebuild with windows 10 but various computers have failing hard drives and other issues. Many are cosmetically challenged. Is it worth rebuilding all of these or just dispose?

If you?ve the time throw some together that can be used for exams / running specific programs / screens.

I plan to keep a few of ours when they go as our tvs are still ran by an old RM machine.

Personally I reckon they are no longer fit for purpose. I'll be looking for a recycling business to come and take them away.

make one for every 2 - take the ram from one to upgrade another (to 8 Gb) - put in a ?12 SSD  ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Patriot-Burst-Elite-120GB-Solid/dp/B08LKMQ9T4/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=120gb+ssd&qid=1674643415&sr=8-4) and they are speedy enough ....

In my experience you are only giving yourself more work in the long term.

Replacing parts
Rebuilds - Getting them setup the way you want them to
People saying how slow they are
Checking Antivirus on them

School just needs to put in a good replacement programme so when times come to replace they are replaced.

EA has a contract with VYTA to remove old school hardware. I think its best to have them remove all the old hardware. It will be one less issue for me and i can get my office back as they are all stored here.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm almost sure the EA contract is with Avenue Recycling - Vyta used to be on it, but not any more (last time I checked).

C2K however use Vyta for disposal of managed hardware - such as the HP teacher laptops etc.  I believe with ex-Catalogue devices it's up to the school to get rid - i.e. via EA Tender

I have been told that VYTA will take all our catalogue equipment including any legacy equipment.

Make them into google flex machines and you can still use them for the internet and google apps. Otherwise bin them.

VYTA dont have the EA contract anymore but will still collect your old desktops/laptops and monitors as they are currently responsible for a collection project.
