Purchasing laptop or netbook
« on: May 04, 2012, 08:42:53 AM »
Here's the problem that landed on my inbox today. Senior IT person wants to purchase class sizes of these for use by students next year. Can be either laptop or Netbook but the specs are below. Thoughts or suggestions welcome with Advance thanks for your time and help

  Very good processor
  • Good RAM
  • Internal memory irrelevant
  • Wi-fi enabled (possible Bluetooth as well)
  • Good-excellent battery life
  • Min. 10? screen
  • USB ports (and SD card if possible)
  • Robust

Some sort of bag / pouch would probably be required as well.

This is not the time to buy anything would be far better off waiting to see what the new system brings as regards to hardware useability.  ::)

But if he must the Ipad is a major contender (Northgates new system looks tailor made for these) without usb is its only problem and they seem to get around that using Icloud etc

A small netbook or laptop would be a cheaper option either Hp or Dell provide useable alternatives  ;D

Although it hurts my soul to say it, the iPad probably ticks all those boxes.  There are other fondleslabs on the market but I don't really know enough about the (no doubt cheaper)alternatives.

Have a read of the reviews on Amazon for the Galaxy tablet it might be a better choice than the iPad, runs flash which we use a lot, seems iPad doesn't

Steer clear of netbooks, there far to small. If your going for a laptop i would say no smaller than 15" anything smaller and its a nightmare when typing plus there isn't that much screen real-estate. If you have the money i would go for the iPad option.

As colerainehigh said they dont display flash content but most sites now our moving away from flash to html5 etc which is compatible with the iPad as for usb amazon sell a dock connector to usb/card reader, we bought one and its pretty damn handy.

If you go the iPad route you'll need a mac and also an iPad charge/sync trolley would be handy if there school owned.

You'll need the mac so you can use the Apple Configurator tool to image all the iPads
