Mac DHCP
« on: March 01, 2012, 03:30:43 PM »
Hi all,

Just recently we've lost ip distribution to the Mac clients.  In server admin it says the service is running, but there's nothing in the client list and the Mac clients have self assigned ip's.  Printers, scanner, usb hub are all down because of no ip distribution.  Have rebooted, stopped and restarted DHCP service, even deleted and reset all settings but to no avail.  We're (still) using Tiger server (10.4.11).  Any hints/help gratefully received.

Cheers.

Try this, i took it from one of apple fourms.

in /etc/bootpd.plist

First of all Bootp_enabled should be True.
Then under the pool config, two lines are missing.
<key>net_address</key>
<string>192.168.42.0</string>

And last change replythresholdseconds from 10 to 1 seconds

After that the DHCP server works

Check your switch is up and running and you can ping round the network. It may be a faulty switch or even a faulty port on the switch or a faulty network cable.

Normally if nothing can see the server it is one of the above or someone has shut the server down.

Alternatively you could create a seperate system of macs outside Northgate control, luckily we evolved our old legacy system and infrastructure, kept the switches and used the spare c2k fibres to run the mac system in parallel, just upgraded the switches - now the mac system has a true Gigabit backbone.

Completely independant system (apart from connection to the internet) but a good few headaches along the way figuring the mac system out.

Only getting back on the forum now!  Teachers in dept. have free periods Per.1 (Free periods! what a concept).  Anyway the next day after having tried practically every tip and trick that Google could conjur up, I uleashed a nice long string of expleteves, and went for the full nuclear strike.  Re-image the the server drive!!  A week or so earlier I noticed an error popping up every other day or so stating that "line at (some such No.) is missing", so decided to "terminate' the problem, "terminate with extreme predudice".

Well that should have sorted that. But it didn't, still no DHCP.  So then thought I'll temporarily set the Airport Extreme to distribute ip's till I find out the cause.
And wouldn't ye know, it wouldn't accept the static ip addres supplied by Northgate.  So that was that for the rest of the day, got caught up in other stuff and didn't get back to it till the following day.  Monday morning came in, fired up the server, wondering 'where to now'? Took a look again at the settings in the server admin, opened up the client list, and every machine, every devive on the subnet was there with it's ip listed.  Did the Apple Server fairy do some magic over the weekend ?  Whatever it was, it's been working ever since.

Is there something turned off that was on when the problem hit, some sort of system conflict with the server? Only a thought in case it happens again.

Hi Stephen,

Nothing that I'm aware of on my side,  everything else appeared to be working ok (switch etc.), it's one of those tricky one's I guess.  Was hoping to upgrade to Leopard Server (10.5) but we're just about stoney broke.  Though I missed it on EBay a couple of weeks ago, the unlimited client version went for ?47.00!!

The 10 client limited edition is currently around ?130.00.  Ah well I'll just have to keep on keepin' on as they say.
