White Mac Unibody
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:43:23 AM »
We recieved some new white macbooks (Unibody) and as usual Mac have changed them from other iMacs and Macbooks - they do not have a firewire socket and they will not start up in target  disk mode. Unfortunately this is exactly what I normally use to create a disk image when setting up new macs. i.e. build a mac, create the image, use the image to build other macs so everyone is identical.

I am going to try

Using Disk Utility, copy the Hard drive image to a USB2 external drive of sufficient capacity, then use System Image Utility on the server to pull it in.

I will post on how effective this is.

First problem I need to boot the machine off a different drive to create the Image off the hard drive. As this is Lion it does not come with system disks - all I can say is Apple B*st*rds!!!

Oops apparently I highlighted the wrong thing - highlight the drive name not the partition name.

On the subject of no DVD's with the machine for Lion this could pose more difficult issues in the future. There are times you really need the restore dvd's for a mac to rebuild but if the machine fully crashes does this mean we will have to send them back to apple to get rebuilt rather than bunging a DVD in and rebuilding the machine back to factory ourselves??

Good old Apple.

Seen a joke the other day you might appreciate Stephen.

Q. What type of contraception do Apple fans use?

Stephen, just create yourself a Lion installer pendrive, http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-make-your-own-os-x-lion-bootable-usb-flash-drive-tutorial/

Thats what we use, you can also use Deploystudio

Currently trying this http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21133?viewlocale=en_US

I am trying to make a net boot that will start the machine and a net image to copy the stuff over it is a pain but I may have to start using deploy studio as I had no sucess trying this stuff last year when I needed and reverted to using firewire - which these macs dont have.

I need to upgrade my server it is still Tiger. Deploy Studio does not seem to work for me on Lion - I cannot create the USB as I havent downloaded the install file from the App store. This is really cheesing me off. No firewire and no target mode with a complete change to the OS.

Looks like I am going to have to install the software on each machine seperately.

Yes I read it, the fact remains that to create a Lion restore image you need a Lion boot disk to create a Lion image. With white Unibody Macbooks you do not have firewire and you do not have Target mode. So you need to create a USB Lion boot disk. Unfortunately you also do not have the install app required as the machines came with Lion on them. Sorta makes life a bit annoying.

Luckily one of the teachers here bought Lion and I have asked him to bring his machine in so I can try to get the app - therefore the boot disk - therefore the image and hopefully these new macs built.

Where as before hand I would have stuck in a firewire cable, made the image and be finished by now. I do not see this as anything as helpful from Mac, in fact it is completely bloody annoying.

I have to say I download the last stable build not the nightly build.

On the other hand Mac in talking about Mountain Lion refer to it as OSX Mountain Lion and not Mac OSX Mountain Lion curious.

Stephen you could try this.

    Open the Mac App Store.
    Navigate to your Purchased page.
Hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click on your 'OS X Lion' purchase link (not on the 'installed' button).
You see the Lion product page. It should say 'Installed,' but that button is clickable. Hold down the Option key again and click on 'Installed.' If you don't hold the option key it will tell you there's already a newer version installed.
    Enter your login credentials.
    Download.

It's important to hold down the Option key twice. Once on the Purchased page, once on the Lion page. You also can't navigate to Lion directly, you need to open it from the purchases page. But if you follow this procedure you should find the Lion Installer within your Applications folder.

Got the image made with DeployStudio.

Went to install it on the next Mac but I have to do the EFI Firmware update.

So I am waiting on a 1.8Gb of updates before I can do the EFI update before I can check this works.

Viva teachers on You Tube hogging the bandwidth!!

Have deploy studio working with a usb startup disk. Thanks dfinney.

Once I get these Macs built I will have to look at what is going wrong with my Netboot.

Hi stephen

i started using my mac server to download and keep updates for all macs and to be honest i think its great get the server to download all updates for your macs and then point all your macs to get there updates from the server. Yes it means having to login to each mac to get it to pull down the updates but i found the speed difference is fantasic and works so well.

No waiting on internet nothing i had 20 imacs updated within a few mins might be another thing to look at just when i was reading about you waiting on a large update
