converting Videos

Hi,

We thought it would be a good idea to convert all our videos to digital format and either put them on the school network or write to DVDs.  Does anyone have any experience of this? Does C2K supply any software?

There have been a number of convertors listed in the past.

If you are converting from video tape, as long as you find a way to sample it to the machine, you will not need to convert to HD video as your sample will not be HD. I use iskysoft video converter for low resolution stuff (bought software).

There is the likes of Freemake video converter, which I cant remember what it is like and if you have a version of nero it has a video converter.

One thing to consider is space, if you only have a couple of videos then it may not be a problem, If however you have lots then storing the files could be tricky.

Saying that if you had an external hard drive hooked up to one of the stations (I suppose even an old RM would do), shared it out then you could use it as sort if a media server type thing? As long as you had nothing else running on it I guess it could work?

Think about backups of the files to, you don?t want to go to all that bother just to find out that someone has accidentally deleted one of the videos.

We use a hardware solution - bought one of those video to DVD converter machines.  Only thing is, its rather fussy about what format of DVD it can burn on (+R only I think it is).

Probably can't buy such things anymore though..

We bought the ION VCR2PC video player - USB into pc and play tape - it converts to AVI then burn to DVD with Nero - works ok mostly - some tracking issues with older over-used tapes but generally ok.

On the subject of space available, any I have converted I have converted to mkv (H264 video compression) using constant quality with variable bit rate. For DVD I would use a max bit rate of 6500 but for video I probably would bring that down to 4500. I use software called TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5 (My own copy). Works well, I recorded Sherlock on my multimedia player at the weekend, copied it into my computer and reduced an hour and a half program to 365Mb keeping it at 720 x 568.
