Yes I've had one using his iPad on the Mac network in here.  It's a few weeks ago now, he was in doing cover in the art dept, asked if he could connect to the Apple wireless classroom and I let him on.  As far as I know it worked ok.

Works fine, and the fact that ipad/pod/phone remembers proxy settings on different wifi connections helps.

Works well as a paper-weight too, so I'm told.

While there is still a need for teachers, there will still be a need for us!

So that is the only difference?

How much are they?

And do you really want to spend that amount of money on something just to be called ?Cool? by other people who have also spent lots of money on a ?Cool? ipad?

Call me cynical if you wish but I think they should have called it the iFad !

Any way I think we are getting a bit off topic.

The new ones have a faster processor and as you can put VLC on them I would like to see how they handle a full bluray rip in h264 mkv format.

I was joking about the cool thing.  ::)

It may not replace a laptop but it can do the things the majority of people need it for email, internet etc and it's 'always on' unlike a laptop.  It's horses for courses in the end I suppose, but I would hardly call it a fad with the number of ipads sold and every manufacturer and their granny making their own version.

I actually haven't seen one up close and personal.  I'm just waiting for them to put a 3g/4g phone in them. I can't wait to see people putting those things up to their ears and talking. Hilarious!

So it is sort of like an iPhone that you cannot fit in your pocket?

I have just realised that I am a grumpy grumpy old man !!! lol

I don?t mean to be all down on the iPad, I just think its too big to be a phone and too small to be a laptop, can?t see where it fits.

It's the sort of device you leave lying about the house and can pick up and use at any time.

laptop = slow to start up, awkward to sit with on your lap, doesn't transfer well to the toilet
ipod/iphone - screen can be too small for many websites, not good when you want to do a lot of reading on t'internet
ipad = comfortable to use while sitting in any position - settee, toilet, in bed

So yes, it's a big ipod/iphone

Have a few here, I find them very limited.
