useing an xp disk try FIXBOOT from the recovery console,....... otherwise try doing a reinstall of system files ...which keeps all your data... ( back up before hand just incase)

you should still be able to run the system reinstall with out loosing any documents but  i would try putting the hard drive into another machine to retrieve the data.

but for the hassle i would concentrate on the backing up then just do a format

I agree with Gerard. You could spend countless hours trying to resolve this - put in another machine as the secondary drive and copy the users files of it, stick it back in the original machine and format/re-install.

If you think it has a sector fault I wouldn't use it again. Get a new one, install the OS, install the corrupt one as the secondary and copy the files across.

o rite.. i'v a program called "get data back" if you can get your hands on it. (not exactly free either) but its a good program and is usually successful. i had one macine before that had a thourough format and i still retrieve thed info.

there 2 versions one for NTFS  and another for FAT32

should be easy to download if you know where to look
