If your DNS server cannot resolve an address it forwards it to a DNS server that can, these are the C2K servers as far as I know, they work here, stick those addreses in and see if it helps.

you see, so dam easy when you know how and relate back to the scraps of paper from 6 months ago. (i see DNS forwarding addresses now that you have pointed them out - took it to be some idiotic scribblings from myself when i was re-establishing the network with a new range when me moved buildings)

Glad you're half sorted.  Don't think you should have to do anything on the workstations apart from make sure their DNS address is set as the ip of your DC
