Just wanted to ask around really who still has a legacy network in there school, what server is used and workstations and is it used alot? or is it now that everyone has moved on to c2k and done away with there old networks.

We still have a legacy network of about 50 machines running  vanilla XP.  95% of my time is spent dealing with C2K issues, legacy network runs very well, although probably not used as much as the C2k system.
 
We're due a new school, I don't know what way they'll jump - I know our Technology department would like their own system, as would Science and Music.  Storage space and software problems have always been the issue with the C2K system, if they could sort these out it would help a great deal.

Bill i phoned today about storage issue with pupils as i dont think 50mb is enough now maybe for 1-3rd years but def not GCSE
and A Level pupils but at the min the only way around that is to buy another server and get the extra space that way.

31 Macs including MacBooks. 1 Xserver 2.8GHz Quad core, 1 7TB Xserve Raid, a number of Airport Extreme and another smaller raid I cant remember the size of.

Basically we did keep the legacy system running but it ended up not being used due to no hardware updates, so when moving image arts reared it's head my HoD decided to chuck out the old machines and start getting macs. The problem now is that we really need to update the old 3com switches as they arent up to the traffic that MIA puts on the raid share.

We did buy another server a couple of years ago, took them six months and dozens of phone calls to get the pupils moved round to give them more space.  However, as each year group gets a different amount of space it means rejigging it all at the beginning of each school year.

i think i did ask this before but how exactly do you back up that 7TB?

We still use a legacy Network about 150 PCs,30 Laptops,4 Win 2003 servers This runs both Art and Music, which are totally Legacy. Science also use 30 laptops non C2k to run their programs. As ICT got 30 new PCs bought in  November Last year the Legacy network is still being updated. As said once this is setup it runs pretty well. ;D
 
We are hoping to replace the music PCs with Macs in the summer.
 
The C2k network well we all know about that don't we  :P

thats one of the reasons i am thinkin of the legacy network again jsut because its easy and cheaper to add more machines on

The only problem I have with the mac system is that I havent looked into bulk creation of users, which is not meant to be easy I believe.
