Vista?
« on: December 18, 2007, 09:43:02 AM »
Although it is not part of the C2k network, and it is full of problems, sooner or later we will get laptops/ desktops with vista on them. Wether in work or at home. I already have had to fix a couple of problems for vista users. With this in mind is it possible to have a new section somewhere to deal with vista problems. If so then I can list how to fix the two problems I have dealt with  ;D

Part of our job description is to keep up with new advancements in ICT - to me this includes browsing the web - how else are you going to find new technologies. Vista falls into this category so if you kknow how to fix a couple of problems before even using the system I'd say your staying on the ball.

we are starting to see the dreaded vista in here too now.  Not only from students but from those people called teachers.  They have office 2007 as well so trying to downgrade a doc is something that has to be explained on a daily basics.

The web filtering system is getting annoying to.  You can't download any helpful software or update you antivirus or spyware.

i wonder will c2k ever adopt vista.
cant imagine it happening anytime soon

So far i havent used it too much. set up wireless for a few people. Most of the configuration settings in vista seem to be a few layers into the menu system, which makes finding them a little bit time consuming when using the traditional methods.

Many people on the net are complaining about Vista, problems with compatibility, uses too much system resources (Bloatware) and in a lot of cases is slower than XP. Indeed I recently bought a game called Crysis and the specification listed on the back for XP was a lower spec than that listed for Vista.

However if you remember XP, when it was initially launched, had the same problems both with people getting used to the new layout, incompatibility problems with peripherals that had been designed for use with 95/98 and the specification being higher to run the same game. So nothing new on that front. The advice at the time should be the same as the advice now ? if you don?t have to install it don?t until at least 1 year is up from launch and SP1 is out otherwise you are just a beta tester.

the one thing i've heard about is the search facility in Vista using alot of resources.
I downloaded the desktop search for my XP system and it definately slows things down because of its indexing service, but is a good search tool.

Yep stephen, I guess like everything new it takes time for people to learn it and manufacturers to get up to speed, so for now i have no plans to upgrade.

A large problem I have heard of is the time it takes to delete/ move files, in one thread I read that sometimes you can actually run out of memory during this. I dont know what method they used but it is meant to be a slow process. Some people are actually using virtual machine to run XP within vista and use it for the slower vista operations!!!!

You have to be aware in reading some of these threads that there are scare mongers out there as well as people with actual problems, not to mention the pro vista bunch. Dont believe every scare story and dont believe every web page singing vistas praise.

I use Vista on several Laptops and it is just just as Stephen says it will take time to get used to, but as we all know it does not matter what new bit of software comes along we are expected to instantly know how it runs and any problems it has.

Obviously being an ICT Tech we are all born with this knowledge encoded in our D.N.A ::)

I have used Vista for about a year on a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop with no problems connected with finding things or speed. I recently upgraded the laptop to 2GB of RAM which has really helped although there wasn't a major problem before upgrading. I'm a keen virtual pilot and you definitely need as much power as you can get your hands on. I like Vista but I can appreciate that others may not because its unlike the easy move from 2000 to XP. This is an operating system that you may have to learn from scratch.

I moved to Vista 64 bit when I bought a new PC.  I'm still having a few gfx problems with Guild Wars and some older games, but other than that its fine. I just wish I could get 64-bit Firefox running properly coz IE7 64-Bit is like lightning.
