Apple School Manager and MDM server
« on: October 14, 2022, 09:59:53 AM »
Does anyone use the Apple School MAnager (I believe all apple programs need to be installed thru this). If so what are you using as a MDM server?? I am slowly digging my way thru this but it is a minefield to set up the first time.

One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.

i am the Apple school manager in my school and we decided to use Jamf  School as the MDM. The way i set it up was to give all staff a new school apple id. Staff cannot download their own apps. Apps are purchased through Apple school manager and then synced with Jamf where they are then pushed out to the ipads. I taught myself with one ipad. It works really well.

Still have MobileIron MDM.
We use apple school manager just for VPP apps that I push out through the MDM.  Staff can buy there own apps if they want on the device.

We may have to change over in the future but at the moment my motto is "aint broke don't fix it".

We have about 150 iPads in our school which I manage.
We just have an ordinary Apple ID account. I am tortured having to password nearly every time I?m downloading an app onto an iPad even though I?m sure I have set it not to do so for free apps.
Is there another way I could be managing these iPads ?
Would I be able to switch over to this Apple school manager or has the horse bolted ?

You can.  Original supplier needs to add to the DEP

we moved all ours to lightspeed as I was doing same as yourself

Academia added us to the DEP and then reset the device and installed onto the mdm
So much easier

That would be a good starting point as they need to contact the school to verify the account. Which MDM are you going to use?

MobileIron (Capita).  At the moment it's been paid for until the new contract is actioned.  I'm hoping that they include this technology in the new contract or at least provide an alternative solution to MobileIron that's more modern.

Since Robert has left the support and update information that he provided is non-existent.  It would be a big task to move from one MDM to another.

it should just be a case of taking the tokens and uploading to the new mdm and setting up your profiles.  The longest part is resetting the ipads.  Used jamf trial then moved to lightspeed on the contract. Works here for what we want it to do. The support there are great and are more than happy to give a 30 day trial of the system.

Is school manager time consuming for the school administrator if he/she are still in a teaching role ?
Of is it a case of easy to manage after initial set up ?
