Sims and memory usage
« on: September 24, 2008, 07:06:52 PM »
Its general practice in our school to leave Sims running all day.  We use it for marking the roll every period and frequently for finding pupils or colleagues.

I opened Task Manager this afternoon to find that Pulsar.exe (used by Sims) was using 150MB of memory, 50MB of Virtual memory and I hadn't actually done anything on Sims for half an hour.  Also this figure increased when running some of the modules but did not decrease when the modules were closed.  Since the stations only have 512MB this is significant

I think that I'll be closing Sims down every period when I mark the roll in future.

:Welcome: Hi Nolly and welcome. Never thought of SIMS using resources like that. The girls in the office are complaining that their computers are running very very slowly, must just see if they have SIMS running all day.

Thank you for your welcome Casper.

Yes, well spotted bahhumbug.  I am indeed a cheater.  Would that be a problem?  As you said yourself,

"Any C2k manager/Administrator will find this useful"

Back to the post... What memory is Sims hogging in your school?  Do you think its affecting performance?

Did I really say that?    where did you find that?

Problem ?  well it could be if you are like too many teachers  .. ie your agenda is not a technician's agenda & you view technicians as mere minions awaiting orders from their intellectual & social superiors.

But I'm sure you're not like that. So  :Welcome:

As for SIMS ... Nobody runs it all the time.  Our cheaters are in the main techophobes and it's a struggle getting them to use it at all.

So no performance problems here (well none caused by SIMS).  & that's computer performance by the way  ;)

Ah yes Nolly ... I did say that. But when you quote somebody, you shouldn't really try to take it out of context or only partially quote what they say .. the full quote was

"Any C2k manager/Administrator will find this useful and if they ain't techies they may not understand our basic need to have a moan every now and then"

and it was in the context of teachers & others joining the forum in this linked thread

Thank you for your kind :Welcome: and your feedback on resources used by SIMS.

I'd be interested to know what resources are being hogged by SIMS elsewhere.  Anybody?

Hello Nolly and welcome to the forum, I had a quick look at sims and found the following:-

Just looking at the size of Pulsar.exe

Open Sims 1960k
1 student search 47,592k after search is closed

Open and Close Nova T and do another student search 47,736 k

Open and close student search - no search done 49,484k

Open and close Report designer - do nothing 59,996k

So as far as I can see just opening and closing things in Sims would increase it's memory usage. What actually causes this you would need to ask the people who designed it, perhaps it is loading part of a database and not releasing it again but it certainly appears a bit on the sloppy side.
