Newbie, hints and tips please

Hey all,

Just started as IT technician and only getting to grips with C2K and all it's wonderfully flexible features

Havn't even been set up as RM management admin yet. Just wondering if anyone has any useful hints and tips

that they use every day and feel they couldn't get along without.

the best tip i can give u is too find a quiet part of the school, preferabely a comms cabinet, lock urself in , and dont come out to 3.30pm.

My 'office' is a corner in the IT suite so I can't hide!!  I've been working as a Technician for a year now and C2k is a double edged sword.  In one hand you don't have to do a whole lot since if something goes wrong all you have to do usually is phone the helpdesk.  The only thing is, you don't really get to improve your IT skills because you aren't allowed to do anything!!



If your school has a legacy network, get your hands dirty with it.  I installed a Linux system on my Legacy network which kept me busy over the summer, but now its up and running, there isnt much to do on it until it gets an overhaul this summer again.



My advice to you is avoid teachers like the plague, you just would not believe some of the things they ask you...........

Hi Flash and welcome to the forum. Unfortuantely you'll never be made an admin on the C2k system. At best you'll get 'Authorised User' status, at worst 'Delegate User' status. Ask you current authorised user to hand over the instruction manuals they received when they attended the C2k training days before the system was installed.

also if some one says jump dont do it right away cos i was the same when i started a few months ago now when the phone rings its like once i get a chance then a few weeks later when they keep going on about it you will get round to doing it...

New padlock has been installed on office door.



I'm not actually even a staff user yet never mind admin or authorised or advanced staff or delegate or whatever as I only started yeasterday.

Just a couple of things

I use location chooser to move through rooms. I know you are not meant to be able to run it from a normal workstation but I can.



If you goto my computer > drive c > program files > Research Machines > Network Administration (or something like that) > Location Chooser - you will find the location chooser program. Copy and paste as a shortcut onto your desktop.



I am not sure if this will run for everyone - I know originally it didnt for my HoD when I showed him in November but for some odd reason it works fine for him now. Basically I just use it from my room and do the odd prowl round the main clusters.



If you are not the privillaged user, you might not be able to see drive C - get the privillaged user to turn your setting up as far as he/she can. I will check on Monday if I get time and see what the highest setting is you can be made from the console.

I can't access the c: drive what level do I need to be at to do this?

I am an authorised user. Originally just before C2k was installed in schools, the learnserve/c2k people had a headmasters meeting and recommended that the technicians shouldnt be authorised users. On the basis of this (at the time I had no HoD) the VP in charge of ICT and the ICT coordinator were going to take the 2 authorised user names. I pointed out to the VP he was welcome to change passwords, call the helpdesk on every problem and e-mail to add and remove users, I would happily sit and watch the queue going in and out his door. He thought about it for all of 20secs and made me the authorised user. I think I might have goofed there.



I dont see the point of the technician not being authorised.

Is there only 2 authorised allocations per school?



Is RM auditor on the available program packages?

I think you need to be Delegate user before you can access the the c drive.

RM Tutor is part of the software installed on the servers by C2k. Once it's allocated to a machine it can be accessed by

Start>All Programs>Teacher Tools

It must be murphys law or sods law or something but the first monday morning i'm working.

Still wanting to make a good impression and all that and set my flippin alarm for the wrong time and was

half an hour late.

And I havn't been late for work in years.

get your slef set up as a delegate user, will get you sorted for now. as for the monday mornin thing we have all been there done it ... hehe

I am not sure which rights do it but get the authorised user to set your enviroment account rights to :



     Type of user: Advanced Staff



     Management Rights: Delegate



This will allow you to see drive C and give you permissions to change passwords. (I hope)

can I just suggest that you have the minimum amount of access - this way you are only limited to do small tasks.  This is what I have done - if they pay me more then certainly I'll take on more responiblitity of the C2k system but until then no way. It's not in my contract to look after this system so i do'nt -call me militant and you would be very right!!!!!
