Strange USB Problem
« on: January 23, 2012, 10:47:53 AM »
Never come across this before so some help would be appreciated. I have been asked to look at a usb pen that the computer fails to recognise. What's strange about it is the fact that it shows in Disk Management for a few seconds and then disappears, then re-appears and the cycle then continues.

I don't think you're stupid, I think what you do is stupid.

check inside the pen where the contacts are and see if there are any foreign objects that are inhibiting the circuit. I take it you have tried it on other machines with the same effect.

Did check the contacts and they look fine. Also have tried it on numerous computers. The guy that owns it says that it was working one day and when he tried to use it the next he couldn't.

Used it in various machines = not the driver.

Could try cleaning the contacts with a plastic eraser but a bit of a shot to nothing.

The only other thing I could suggest is a dry solder joint. If you open the device there are four pins coming from the usb contacts that go into the circuit board (usually after a small right angle turn). One of these pins may have got loosened with plugging in and unplugging the drive creating a bad joint with the circuit board - hence the connect disconnect that you see. Resoldering these pins on the ciruit board may help but it is a long shot. Most likely is that the device has went belly up.
