Windows deployment services
« on: October 11, 2018, 08:53:20 AM »
been having this issue for a long time now and never thought to ask for help - google also gets me no where.
On our legacy network when trying to rebuild or even capture an image it is very hit and miss if a machine will boot into pxe or not.
The machine will get an ip from the dhcp ok, display the list of bootable images ie - setup x32, x64, capture x32, x64 and progress on the the windows 10 pxe logo and then freezes there.
Generally i put it down to network traffic as i seem to have more luck booting a machine as soon as i get in in the morning than i do during a school day.also it seems less of an issue during the summer months as i have built full rooms with it only being an issue on one or 2 machines.
I dont have any sort of QOS enabled on the server that i know of and our smart switches dont seem to have it enabled either, they are generally left with their default settings

has any one any ideas?

How big is your image Gerard?

I know if I rebuild several machines - particularly off the same switch there is a noticeable slow-down, particularly during term time.

I keep my images as small as possible - Windows, Office & Photoshop are the only big things on it, then obviously a few small items such as VLC etc.  Chrome is added via GPO as an MSI, as is Phython software & as many others as possible.

server 2012 - windows 7 clients

Just noticed this - you say Win 7 clients, but you also mention the Windows 10 PXE logo?  Which one is it?  lol!

the images are around 2.5gb , the images themselfs are win 7 but it uses the windows 10 PE for the actual deployment  i think as it looks like a windows 10 logo ( uploaded a screen shot of where it sticks.

i havent changed the images in a few years so not sure why its becoming a problem now. havent been able to get a single machine to rebuild for 2 days now.

Have you tried either restarting your server which contains the DHCP / WDS roles?  Sounds to me like a service somewhere has stopped running if it's not allowing you to rebuild anything suddenly.

just checking Gerard is it not progressing into starting the image build? or loading the image just looking at the pic looks like its hasn't gotten to the stage of deploying the image or has it?

On the image when you created just wondering was the system sysprep'd before capture of the image?

as you say its getting a DHCP lease and showing the setup capture images, on the server WDS is it showing the computer actually connected?
