Title: Smart vaping sensors
Post by: zyber on July 18, 2023, 09:43:07 AM
Anyone installed a smart vaping sensor? These sensors work through wifi network to alert of a vaping incident in the school. Is it worth talking bto Capita about this or would this be a no go from the start?

Let me know how you get on.
I have been asked about getting some in school as well.

Not something which has come up here yet (thankfully) but I'd advise speaking to your C2K system analyst to see if any are "approved" as it were - as they can be quite fussy about giving "unapproved" things access to the wifi network.

There is also a viewpoint that they are next to useless, and when the alert goes it depends on someone being available to attend & investigate but hey that's above our remit :P

Chances are that the person vaping will have disappeared before anyone arrives. These 2 sensors just arrived out of the blue. I dont undderstand why i was not asked first before purchasing these sensors.

If you can, Try and talk SMT out of knee jerk ordering these.

This is the usual shit. Sensationalized headlines, everyone jumps on the bandwagon and spends a shit ton of money on gear that no one uses.

We have already said to our SMT we could build these ourselves with a Pi and a few sensors for £50 -£100. The issues is went someone goes to the toilet and finds 20 kids it there, you can't sanction them all you also cant search the kids. So what's the point of having sensors.

Too late - from what I read 2 have already arrived  ;D ;D ;D

Totally agree.  They are up there with "wireless radiation shields" lol

We are trying one out here but as it is not on the register of 3rd party devices Capita will not open the proxy settings to let it work.
