Title: Surface Pro Projection Freezing - Possible solution
Post by: Renegade on September 26, 2022, 10:34:27 AM
Hi.

Like many of us, we're having the issue with the Surface Pro 7+'s freezing when projecting and using OneNote.  I've had a dig about online and came across the following website.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/surface-pro-7-crashes-when-using-a-pen-with-an/82ef28e5-5244-45a1-ba80-27549a545ee0 (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/surface-pro-7-crashes-when-using-a-pen-with-an/82ef28e5-5244-45a1-ba80-27549a545ee0)

The long and the short of it is to follow these 3 steps:

1. Download the appropriate Service Pack from the MS site (Windows 10)
Surface Pro 7 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=100419 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=100419)
Surface Pro 7+  (EA supplied devices)  - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=102633 (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=102633)

2. Open Device Manager and delete the Intel Iris display.  Uninstall and delete the driver.   The screen will go tiny so get the glasses at the ready.

3. Install the downloaded Service pack.  Be patient.  It will look like it has frozen or stalled, but it's still active.  Takes about 5-10 mins.

I've run through this on a couple already and (touch wood) haven't had any returns.

That first link has code for creating BAT and Powershell files to automate it, but I didn't bother.

Hopefully this will work for everyone.

Thanks for sharing this. I had done exactly the same thing as you listed and had a bit of success temporarily. It seemed to go wrong again after a set of updates. So you might need to do this again but it definitely worked for us for a little bit. We did also find that it worked for some users but for others it was just as bad. Definitely worth a go!

Found a new thread with another potential fix.

My three week old Surface Pro 7 screen would freeze for about 6 seconds every 30 seconds or so.  This fix seems to have fixed the problem:  I installed 1: "Intel Graphics Command Center"   2: Click the 4th icon in the left column and Click the "POWER" tab.  3: turn off "Panel Self Refresh" and turn off "Display Power Savings".  4: Not sure you really need to reboot, but I did.

It's a tool that has been discontinued from the MS Store but I downloaded the same tool from the Dell website.

I've just installed it on a Surface for the teacher who is having the most bother, so time will tell if this is another step forward.
