Hi folks
Just throwing this one out there, has any other schools have the Dell wireless laptops stored in a trolley with the 2 wireless access points? The reason why I am asking is we have had these for the last 2 years and they have been totally hit or miss, as last few weeks we cant seem to get any class fully logged on succesfully? To be honest we do use them alot in school and can be used up for the full 8 periods in a school day, on a average with 3 different class groups in the day.
Just wondering if any other schools have been having any difficulities or issues with their wireless laptops, C2K are as ever helpful ;-| I just want to see what other schools opinion of them are and shouldnt they always worked if Northgate sells them shouldnt have have a service level agreement with them to say these will work at least 95% of the time?
Thanks

Only issue wuth these would be the battery charging and battery life beginning to drop. Have had on the odd occasion problems with logging on but usually turns out that the WIFI slider isn't in the on position.
-
The only issues we have are that the laptops get snac'd from time to time or as bah said the slider is switched off. We mamaged to sort the snac issues ourselves by leaving the laptops on once a week for a couple of hours in the trolleys and using PStools to shut them down.
-
We gave up with ours and got the rooms cabled that we were using them in. The wireless was too unreliable and disrupted classes too much.
-
We have given all the teachers the laptops and have removed the stations from their rooms (to make up numbers in other rooms). Last summer I put the wireless point in the staff room as teachers may have free time and this will let them have access to the network. I E-Mailed all staff to inform them that it was in place, I have yet to see anyone use it. I have tested a few laptops on it myself and it seems fine.
-
Yes we have had problems with unreliable connections, I have now taken to booting them up wired once a week just to make sure all the updates are on there. I also run a command gpupdate /force when the laptop is wired if there have been problems connecting wirelessly.

Awful problems with laptops here. We have four laptop trolleys and every time they are used there are usually 2-5 laptops that wont connect to the WAP. Mostly the Dell E550 models for some reason. All need the SNAC quarantine fix to get them working again. Doesn't matter if they have been connected to the network the previous day, they will still get quarantined.
I had one teacher that had booked one trolley wait 20 mins before the WAP started accepting connections.
If I ever quit my job at this school it will be because of these damn laptops.

Absolute time consuming, arm hurting shite.

Major problem today with laptop trolley. Got a call -
Teacher: "no laptops allowing log in - 'yellow wire' in wall - 'grey box' flashing"
Me: "Is the 'yellow wire' attached to the 'grey box' ?"
Teacher: "Ehhhhh No. Should it be?"
Me: "Hmmmmm Try it and see. You may have to restart the laptops" :-X

Fault between the seat and the keyboard
That's a regularly occurring fault here.
-
Yeah, usually an IDTENT error ;D
-
Don't you mean an ID10T error :)
-
I thought that's what I said
though I suppose it could also be ID2T remembering the number of people who understand binary ............ or something
and also that this is in clear.
OK to say things like that in the Lounge when you have a pint or two :D

starting to get alot of batteries failing now and its going to be costly replacing them all.

does the dell d630 battery 9 cell fit into the trolley (16bay)
thanks
-
thank god we dont use our trolly we have the wireless router in our staff room and laptops given to teachers
-
I use Laptops & Spares to purchase replacement batteries. David (Education Sales Manager) is fantastic & if I remember correctly he gave us a good deal when buying in bulk.
Postage & delivery speeds are very reasonable too.
I've found no problems with the 9 cells with regards to fitting into our trolleys too - and we have a few different types of trolley. It extends the breadth of the laptop out the front by about 1 inch. It forms a handy wrist rest too lol!

thanks
i called David and very helpful, he will send me a few prices today.

I was quoted at least a couple of thousand for 24 Dell laptop replacement batteries, I wonder POD how much rough guess was your quote from the Laptop ans Spares company?, I work for a school whose funding is controlled by the ELB I dont think i can buy ad-hoc from companies not on a recommended list? :( :( :( :( :police:
