Title: AV for server
Post by: Gerard on November 23, 2010, 09:42:46 PM
latly iv been having a lot of bother with my legacy network... machines blue screening, display going to 16bit colour symantec being set to autodisabled and i cant enable it etc and its wiping out suite by suite.. so for the last few weeks iv had richard from the board out etc and after a lot of head scratchin i still dont know the cause

i have got all the machines working again by rebuilding every machine on the network and installing security essentials instead off symantec and so far the problems have not came back.. until today when symantec autoprotect popped up saying autoprotect disabled.. :'( :'( :'( :'(

whats the chances i can install security essentials or somethin similar (free) on the server as a temporary measure untill i get a different av like sophos.

also if you have any ideas what could be causing the headaches please offer suggestions lol
richard thinks it could be a virus that symantec isnt picking up and its viral.

but iv been googling away here and finding a lot of people saying about corrupted virus defs causing various blue screens so that could be a possibility.

not sure what to do.. dont want to find out a nice blue screen on my server tomorro :(

Symantic Anti-Virus seems pretty poo to me, considering its meant to be the best on the market.  You should be able to use the Sophos anti-virus courtesy of c2k - maybe it would be work installing Sophos instead and seeing how it goes?

If I was you though I'd download Ubuntu server and have done with it.  :)

i came in this morning and the autoprotect was enabled again to hopefully it was just updating. richard from the board is looking in to sophos for us so i just need to keep things ticking over until then

linux wouldnt have a chance here.. teachers and pupils already have enough bother getting their head around having a legacy (with the same operating system as c2k) and a c2k network

+ i wouldnt have a clue how to use linux with out a GUI  ( im still a novice at wind0s server 2003)

Si is correct, as far as I know, you should be able to get sophos free from your local c2k branch (or at least a download code and license).

I tke it you have done a full scan of your legacy server.

try your local teachers centre or phone a c2k number and ask them.
