Title: Library scanners
Post by: Belfast_Tech on January 12, 2010, 03:19:00 PM
Our Librarian's scanner has given up the will to live... out of interest, what type have you (if you have that is!) recommended / bought for your library?

I've lent her my WASP barcode scanner but it's failing to pick up some fine barcodes...  it has to be USB connectable for handiness.

Thanks!

Get in contact with the library people from the board and they'll recommend one. We use wasp for our asset system in IT and it has trouble reading some codes, the funny thing is it reads apple serials fine and there tiny.

Out of interest has anyone tried installing alice and the barcode reader onto the new HP machines. Our barcode reader connects through the keyboard which is ps/2. I was wondering will it still work. Currently using an rm machine, we kept after install but now i have to move it somewhere else. Any info will be great help.

The Heron doesn't work on our barcodes :(

I don't know what the name of the barcodes are but the lines are very narrow - I'd say much more narrow than the usual barcodes.

Got to return it now :(  Anyone any more suggestions?

You have set it up for Plessey bar codes, haven't you???

I didn't realise it needed to be configured - so unless it's default no it wasn't set up.

Oops - I guess the Plessey codes are used for the books & the Alice software?

It's already been posted back to the warehouse hehe!  On the look out for another now.

http://www.barcodeman.co.uk (http://www.barcodeman.co.uk) will set it up for you if you ask. But of course you need to know to ask for Plessey barcodes.

I bought in a Cipher Lab 1166 Wireless Bluetooth scanner for our Library last summer.  The Librarian says it's fantastic.  Range of approx 50m.

Worked an absolute treat for collecting all the Serial Numbers for the new machines as well   ;)

Who needs to walk round to get the serial numbers, try this vbs script. All you have to change/do in the script is create a seperate txt file with all your machine numbers deni-stn001, and edit the Strtextfile entry and the setobjfile entry.

I use a wasp barcode scanner for our asset database(WLR8905) it comes with a programming book so you can tell the scanner what it can read.
